We recently polled the Sportsman’s Shop team to find out what everyone recommends as their top choice firearm for personal defense. Here’s what everyone had to say!
I would go with a Glock 19 9mm. This gun has low recoil, 15-round capacity and goes bang every time you pull the trigger. It’s lightweight, and extremely accurate. I usually carry Hornady Critical Duty 9mm hollow point ammo. It has great penetration. The FBI uses it, so it’s proven.
For female buyers, I recommend a .380 semi-automatic pistol. But what’s most important is how it feels in their hand. Can they access the controls? Can they rack the slide? For sheer simplicity I would recommend a .38 special short-barreled revolver. A revolver is ready to go – if it misfires you just keep squeezing the trigger.
For personal defense I recommend a .45 ACP, specifically a Kimber 1911. These are highly accurate and they have a clean, crisp trigger pull. I’ve been shooting one for years and I know the controls inside and out. For home defense I recommend a 12-gauge shotgun – preferably a pump action – because they’re simple to operate. In a stressful situation, a shotgun will give you more margin of error.
I like my Kimber Ultra Carry 1911 for personal defense. It’s small and compact, it fits my hand very well and it packs a big-a$$ punch! I usually carry Glaser Powerballs. This ammo is like a standard hollow-point but in the tip it has a polymer ball. These rounds feed just like a full metal jacket but have more stopping power.
For personal defense I carry a Smith & Wesson .38 revolver. The revolvers are much simpler to use. It’s not something you have to think about, you don’t have to flip the safety off, and it’s ready to roll. Also, it is simple for anyone to pick up and use.
